Leftovers

I went for a morning walk today with my cousin, Cypress—though I always call her Manang Jel. This has become a usual routine for us, starting the day with a light stroll and catching up on anything and everything under the sun.
As we were walking, Daddy called and invited us for breakfast. We stopped by for some hot arroz caldo with egg—comfort food at its finest. Since I’m not used to eating breakfast so early, I couldn’t finish my bowl. So I packed up the rest and we headed home. I had work waiting for me anyway.
But just as we were walking back, I spotted a stray dog. He looked tired, thin, and clearly hungry. Without a second thought, I gave him the rest of my arroz caldo. In that moment, what felt like a simple leftover to me became his first meal of the day.
It made me realize something: sometimes, the things we overlook or take for granted might actually be a lifeline for someone—or something—else. A small act, a seemingly insignificant gesture, can hold more meaning than we know.
